NVIDIA has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Hugging Face for $12.93 billion, making strategic move to scale open-source artificial intelligence infrastructure for developers and institutions worldwide. The acquisition aims to enhance the platform’s reliability, safety, model evaluation, and deployment capabilities while preserving the independent, open ecosystem that has made Hugging Face a central hub for AI research and development.
Over the past decade, Hugging Face has established itself as a primary home for the open model developer community. The platform currently supports over 18 million developers, researchers, and creators hosting more than 3 million models, 500,000 datasets, and 1 million applications. Additionally, over 200,000 companies utilize its resources to discover, evaluate, customize, and deploy AI technologies.
Under the terms of the agreement, Hugging Face will continue to operate as an open platform for the entire AI ecosystem, retaining its brand identity and management vision. The platform will maintain multi-cloud and multi-accelerator support, allowing builders to choose their preferred hardware, computing platforms, frameworks, and deployment services without requiring NVIDIA compute infrastructure. The company will also continue supporting open-source and open-weight models from all builders across the industry.
The deal reinforces both companies’ shared commitment to open-weight models as a driver for distributed AI leadership and innovation. Open models enable startups, universities, and public institutions to adapt advanced capabilities without training models from scratch, accelerating deployment across key sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, and education.
NVIDIA has long been a contributor to Hugging Face, serving as its largest provider of open models and data with over 500 models and 250 open datasets released on the platform. By combining Hugging Face’s developer community with NVIDIA’s global reach and engineering infrastructure, the combined entity aims to strengthen open-source AI development and broaden access to advanced computing tools globally.
