AT&T Inc. has entered into a definitive agreement to sell AT&T Mexico to Grupo Televisa and Fintech Holdings for $2 billion in cash at closing, subject to adjustments and additional contingent benefits. The transaction marks a strategic exit from the Mexican wireless market as the US telecommunications giant sharpens its focus on domestic network expansion.

The deal reflects AT&T’s long-term capital allocation strategy, which prioritizes core connectivity investments in the United States. By divesting its Mexican unit, AT&T intends to direct additional capital toward building out its domestic 5G and dense fiber infrastructure, positioning its network to handle increasing demand driven by artificial intelligence applications.

John Stankey, Chairman and CEO of AT&T, emphasized that the AI-driven future relies heavily on converged networks backed by fiber assets. He noted that the divestment aligns with the company’s strategic goal of channeling growth resources into the US market while allowing the Mexican business to evolve under local ownership.

During its tenure in Mexico, AT&T built and modernized the country’s second scaled wireless network. However, company leadership indicated that the next phase of growth for AT&T Mexico is best managed by regional operators with complementary local assets. Grupo Televisa brings an established fixed-line broadband footprint in Mexico, while Fintech Holdings provides fresh capital and operational experience within the domestic wireless sector.

The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2027, contingent upon customary closing conditions and required regulatory approvals in Mexico. Until the deal completes, AT&T will classify AT&T Mexico as held-for-sale in its continuing operations, starting with its third-quarter 2026 financial filings. AT&T confirmed that the sale will not alter the service experience for its US consumer and enterprise customers.
