The Commission for the Protection of Competition of Cyprus has initiated an ex officio investigation into recent price increases in the ready-mix concrete sector, following a series of press reports earlier this year and its own preliminary assessment of the indications.
According to the Commission, the decision was taken in light of the sector’s strategic importance for both consumers and the broader Cypriot economy. The inquiry will examine whether companies active in the supply of ready-mix concrete may have engaged in collusive practices that could restrict, distort, or impede competition within the Republic.
The authority emphasised that the construction sector is a vital pillar of economic activity, and any anticompetitive conduct within it can ultimately lead to higher costs that are passed on to consumers. For this reason, the Commission reiterated that maintaining effective competition in the sector remains a priority, and it will continue to closely monitor market developments to identify and address potential infringements without delay.
The Commission clarified that the launch of an ex officio investigation does not imply wrongdoing by any undertaking, nor does it prejudge the outcome of the inquiry. The measure is taken solely to ensure compliance with competition law and to safeguard the public interest.
The announcement was issued pursuant to Article 26(2)(k) of the Protection of Competition Law.
