The Romanian Competition Council has officially launched an investigation into Eco Sud SA over a potential abuse of its dominant market position. The inquiry focuses on the company’s role as the administrator of the Solid Urban and Industrial Waste Ecological Landfill located in Vidra, Ilfov County.
Triggered by a formal complaint, the antitrust authority has gathered initial evidence suggesting that Eco Sud SA may have imposed abusive contractual clauses on operators providing mechanical-biological treatment services for mixed municipal waste. These allegedly anticompetitive practices are suspected to have started in 2024.
As part of the ongoing investigation, officials carried out unannounced inspections at Eco Sud SA’s headquarters in Bucharest as well as its operational site in Ilfov County. These dawn raids were formally authorized by the Bucharest Court of Appeal to secure the necessary documents and data to clarify the situation. The Competition Council emphasized that these inspections are a standard procedural step and do not imply any premature judgment regarding the company’s guilt.
Under Romanian competition law, market leaders are strictly prohibited from exploiting a dominant position through anticompetitive behavior that could distort economic activity or ultimately harm consumers.
