OpenAI has unveiled ChatGPT Atlas, a new artificial intelligence-powered web browser built around its widely popular chatbot, in what analysts see as a direct challenge to Google Chrome’s long-standing dominance.

The launch marks OpenAI’s most ambitious expansion yet beyond conversational AI, aiming to integrate ChatGPT directly into users’ browsing experiences. With over 800 million weekly active users, OpenAI is now positioning itself at the center of how people navigate, search, and interact with the web.

Atlas, available globally on Apple’s macOS starting today, allows users to open a ChatGPT sidebar in any browser window to summarize content, compare products, analyze data, or complete tasks without leaving the page. Its most advanced feature, known as “agent mode,” enables ChatGPT to act on users’ behalf—interacting with websites from start to finish.

In a live demonstration on Tuesday, OpenAI developers showed how ChatGPT could find a recipe online and then automatically purchase all the necessary ingredients by navigating to Instacart and completing the checkout process autonomously.

“AI gives us a rare moment to rethink what it means to use the web,” OpenAI said in a statement. “A browser built with ChatGPT takes us closer to a true super-assistant that understands your world and helps you achieve your goals.”

The company emphasized privacy and control, noting that the new browser memory feature—which allows ChatGPT to recall context from websites visited—remains fully optional. Users can view, archive, or delete stored memories and browsing history at any time.

Atlas will soon be available for Windows, iOS, and Android, with beta versions also accessible for Business, Enterprise, and Education plans.

A New Phase in the AI Search Race

The debut of Atlas is expected to accelerate a broader shift toward AI-driven search, where conversational tools synthesize information rather than relying on traditional keyword-based results. This evolution poses an increasing challenge to Google’s search and browser ecosystem, which remains the world leader with a 71.9% global market share as of September, according to StatCounter.

Shares of Alphabet (GOOGL.O), Google’s parent company, fell 1.8% in afternoon trading following the announcement, Reuters reported.

Analysts say OpenAI’s move could eventually disrupt search advertising, a market where Google controls roughly 90% of spending.

“Integrating chat into a browser is a precursor for OpenAI starting to sell ads,” said Gil Luria, analyst at D.A. Davidson. “Once OpenAI begins monetizing user attention through ads, it could take a meaningful share of search advertising away from Google.”

The launch of Atlas follows similar innovations by competitors in the emerging AI browser sector, including Perplexity’s Comet, Brave’s AI-integrated browser, and Opera’s Neon, as tech firms race to combine web navigation with generative AI features such as page summarization, code drafting, and automated task completion.

Google’s Countermoves and Industry Context

Since ChatGPT’s debut in late 2022, Google has been developing its own generative AI capabilities. The company recently integrated its Gemini AI model into Chrome for U.S. users, offering “AI Mode,” which displays synthesized overviews alongside traditional search results. A rollout to iOS Chrome users is planned.

In September, Google secured a legal victory when a U.S. federal judge ruled that it would not be required to sell its Chrome browser. Judge Amit Mehta noted that growing investments in generative AI from Big Tech and startups alike now pose substantial competitive pressure on Google’s search monopoly.

Despite these challenges, Google Chrome continues to dominate the global browser market. However, analysts warn that Atlas could mark a pivotal moment—not only for AI adoption in everyday browsing but also for how information, advertising, and productivity tools converge in the coming years.

“With Atlas, ChatGPT doesn’t just answer questions—it accompanies users across the web,” said Yogya Kalra, a college student and early tester. “It feels like having a personal tutor or assistant who understands what you’re working on in real time.”

Availability and Next Steps

ChatGPT Atlas is available today for Free, Plus, Pro, and Go users on macOS, with additional versions for other operating systems in development. The browser allows seamless import of bookmarks, passwords, and browsing history from existing browsers.

As OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman continues to steer the company into new markets, the launch of Atlas positions OpenAI not just as a leader in AI conversation, but as a central player in the next generation of web experience—one where search, productivity, and intelligent automation converge into a single, adaptive interface.
