Argentina’s National Antitrust Commission (ANC) has officially conditioned the acquisition of Telefónica Argentina by Telecom Argentina, imposing strict structural and behavioral requirements to protect the nation’s telecommunications sector. The ruling by the Competition Defense Tribunal ensures the transaction will not result in a monopolistic stranglehold on the market, neutralizing the potential anticompetitive effects of the merger.

At the core of the regulatory intervention is the preservation of a balanced mobile market. By placing clear conditions on the deal, the tribunal aims to guarantee the continued existence of at least three robust, competitive mobile operators at a national level. This move prevents a duopoly or a single dominant player from dictating prices and service quality for millions of mobile users.

Beyond mobile networks, the ANC’s structural and behavioral remedies specifically target several key areas vulnerable to consolidation. The mandatory conditions are designed to neutralize market dominance in residential internet delivery, corporate services, and wholesale network access. By forcing Telecom Argentina to adhere to these strict guardrails, the regulator ensures that independent internet service providers and corporate clients retain fair access to necessary infrastructure and competitive pricing.
